Physiology of pancreas and insulin secretion Flashcards
What lymph nodes surround the pancreas?
peripancreatic lymph nodes
Parasympathetic supply to the pancreas
vagus nerve
Sympathetic supply to the pancreas
coeliac axis
Where is the pancreas located in relation to the stomach?
pancreas is posterior to the stomach
Exocrine function of pancreas
secretes enzymes that aid digestion
Endocrine function of pancreas
Islets of Langerhans - secretes hormones - into portal vein - into SVC - into heart - to rest of body
What is anterior to the pancreas?
stomach, lesser sac, transverse mesocolon, superior mesenteric artery
What is posterior to the pancreas?
aorta, IVC, right renal artery, right and left renal veins, superior mesenteric vessels, splenic vein, hepatic portal vein, left kidney, left suprarenal gland
What is superior to the pancreas?
splenic artery
What is lateral to the pancreas?
spleen
What is medial to the pancreas?
duodenum (descending and horizontal parts)
What is metabolism?
flow of energy throughout body
What does insulin mediate?
mediates glucose storage
lowers blood glucose concentration by storing glucose
What does glycogen mediate?
mediates release of glucose from storage
increases blood glucose concentration by releasing glucose
How does insulin lower blood glucose concentration?
glycolysis - produces ATP
glycogenosis - produced glycogen to be stored short term in liver or muscle
lipogenesis - produces lipids/fatty acids to be stored long-term in adipose tissue
