Control of appetite Flashcards
Which part of the brain is appetite regulated by?
hypothalamus - specifically independent control centres in the hypothalamus driving 2 opposing appetite sensations
What are the 2 appetite-related independent control centres in the hypothalamus?
satiety centre
hunger (feeding centre)
Where in the hypothalamus is the satiety centre located?
ventromedial nucleus (VMN)
Where in the hypothalamus is the hunger (feeding) centre located?
lateral hypothalamic area (LHA)
What are anorexigenic and orexigenic responses?
anorexigenic = inhibit feeding
orexigenic = stimulates feeding
What hormone drives the sensation of hunger?
ghrelin
When and where is ghrelin produced?
released from stomach during fasting in direct response to reduced stretch of the stomach
What elicits short term orexigenic responses?
ghrelin
What elicits long term anorexigenic responses?
leptin
