Physiology lecture 2_Cell Membrane Flashcards
Peripheral protein
protein that exists within the plasma membrane on the ECF side only.
Integral protein
Protein that transverses the entire plasma membrane
What are the 5 factors that affect simple diffusion of a molecule through a cell membrane
1) lipid solubility
2) Molecular size
3) Concentration Gradient
4) Membrane surface area
5) Composition of lipid layer
What is facilitated diffusion
It is typically defined as diffusion down a concentration gradient through protein channels that do not require energy to activate
Define Primary active transport
It is the transport of ions against their concentration gradient using the direct input of ATP (example Na K ATPase)
Define secondary transport
The active transport of an ion against its concentration gradient through coordinated movement with another ion moving down its respective consentration gradient
Define symporter
a secondary active transport where both types of ions move in the same direction
Define anti porter
a secondary transport where each type of ion moves opposite eachother.
