Physiology Lecture 1_ICF ECF Flashcards
1
Q
ICF vs ECF volumn
A
ICF represents 2/3rds of total body fluid (approx 28L) ECF represents 1/3rd of total body fluid (approx 14L)
2
Q
What are the two parts of ECF
A
1) Interstital fluid
2) Plasma
3
Q
Where is sodium high
A
interstital fluid and plasma (explain why)
4
Q
Where is potassium high
A
Intracellular fluid (explain why)
5
Q
Where are proteins high
A
Intracellular fluid and plasma (not found in interstital fluid explain why)
6
Q
Tonicity vs Osmolarity
A
Osmolarity is the consentration of total dissolved solutes. Tonicity is the consentration of impermiable solutes only (example D5 normal saline). Tonicity is of significantly more medical importance.
