Physiology Flashcards
1
Q
Calcium efflux from myocytes
A
Na+/Ca2+ exchange pump and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase pump
2
Q
How does calcium influx lead to muscle contraction?
A
- Voltage gated Ca2+ channel opens –> calcium-calmodulin complex activates Myosin light chain kinase which phosphorylates Myosin
- Calcium binds troponin on actin –> moves tropomyosin out of the way –> exposes myosin binding site

3
Q
What is the role of ATP in muscle contraction?
A
Causes Actin-myosin to detach –> When ATP is split the myosin head is cocked and readied for next contraction
