Physiology 4 Flashcards
Describe the change in oxygen partial pressure around the system
From atmosphere to lungs partial pressure decreases and further slight decreases occur as oxygen travels through the system
Effect of partial pressure on gas solubility - Henry’s law
Increase in partial pressure increases gas solubility
Ways oxygen is transported in the blood
(1) most - Haemoglobin bound oxygen (Rev blood cells)
(2) fewer - oxygen physically dissolved in blood
What is the primary factor which determines percent saturation if haemoglobin with O2?
Oxygen partial pressure (PO2)
Oxygen delivery to tissues can be impaired by…
Respiratory disease
Heart failure
Anaemia
Co-operative of haemoglobin binding to O2
Binding of one subunit increases affinity for other subunits
(Sigmoid curve - flattens once all sites occupied)
Bohr effect - PO2 in arterial blood vs tissues
PO2 higher in Arterial blood > more O2 picked up
PO2 lower in tissues > encourages release of O2
Foetal haemoglobin HbF
Higher O2 affinity - allows transfer of O2 between mother /foetus if O2 levels are low
Where is Myoglobin (Mb) round and how many hawk groups does it have?
Only present in skeletal and cardiac muscle, has 1 harm group > no co-operativity
Presence of myoglobin in blood indicates…
Muscle damage
