Physiology Flashcards
What are osteoprogenitor cells?
cells located in the periosteum and endosteum (lines medullary cavity) which can differentiate into osteoblasts when stimulated by TGF-B, or become chondrogenic cells during hypoxic conditions.
How does osteoprogegrin act when estrogen levels are high?
It inhibits osteoblasts from stimulating the formation of osteoclasts from precursor cells thereby limiting bone resorption.
what are the basic stages of fracture healing?
Fibrocartilage formation with the help of fibroblasts which produce collagen to bridge the gap, while osteoblasts begin ossificaiton process and form spongy bone.
Reactive-inflammation, clear cells and tissues
Reparative-new tissue formed
Remodleing -tissue is remodled
what is endochondral ossification?
Growth and ossification of long bones.
What factors contribute to osteonecrosis?
vascular compression
steroid use
thromboemobolism
vasculitis
