Physiogarphic Factors Flashcards
What do physiographic factors refer to
They refer to the lay of land
Eg altitude
Slope
Aspect
What do the factors have a an effect on
They have an effect of the distribution, number and types of organisms
ASPECT
what is this
Aspect refers to the direction a slope faces
ASPECT
Describe the conditions of north facing slopes and south facing slopes
North facing -hotter and drier and more suited to plants that grow in those conditions like aloe and grasses
South acing - cooler ,wetter and shadier and more suited for shade loving plants like ferns and forest
ASPECT
What are Seaward and leeward slopes
Seaward slopes - slopes facing ocean
and leeward slopes - slopes facing land
ASPECT
Describe the conditions of
Seaward slopes on the eastern coast of South Africa have a higher rainfall and therefore denser vegetation as they face the moist winds from the sea.
Leeward slopes are drier and have vegetation which is less lush and is suited to drier conditions.
SLOPE
WAIT IS SLOPE
Slope (gradient) refers to how steep or flat the ground is.
SLOPE
What are slopes also exposed to that will affect the plants growing there
Slopes are exposed to wind and sun and this will also affect the plants growing there.
SLOPES
describe gentle slopes and steep slopes
Gentle slope-more topsoil , greater water retention , lush vegetation
Steep slope -less topsoil , less water retention, sparse vegetation
ALTITUDE
what is this
Altitude is the heightabove sea level
ALTITUDE
what is affected by altitude
Atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing
Temperature decreases with increasing altitude
Oxygen decreases with increasing altitude
