Carbon Cycle Flashcards
What has to happen to the carbon on earth
The carbon on earth has to be recycled so that sufficient is available for organisms to survive.
Explain the stages in the carbon cycle
Fossil fuels
? Carbon is stored in fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and in wood.
? When fossil fuels burn, carbon is returned to the atmosphere as CO2.
Explain the stages in the carbon cycle
Living organisms
? Living organisms respire and return CO2 to the atmosphere.
Explain the stages in the carbon cycle
Plants
? Plants trap CO2 during photosynthesis and convert it into organic compounds such as starch and sugars - excess organic compounds are stored in the plant bodies.
Explain the stages in the carbon cycle
Animals
? Animals consume other plants or animals and get their carbon this way - proteins, fats and carbohydrates are stored in their bodies.
Explain the stages in the carbon cycle
Decomposes
? Decomposers break down decaying bodies of dead organisms.
? CO2 is returned to the atmosphere during the process of decay.
