Physio Cardio 12.11.12- Definitions Flashcards
Afterload
Pressure that ventricles must produce to open semilunar valves and eject blood.
What is the primary factor affeting afterload
pressure in aorta (left ventricle) or in pulmaonry artery (right ventricle)
What is aortic stenosis? What can it do to afterload?
A narrowign of the arotic valcve or of the aorta itself
IT creates mroe resistnae, or incompetent valves hat allow regurgitation
Increase in afterload stretches the myocytes and increases abilityt o generate force (up to a limit)
Which arteries are more compliant; large or small?
Large arteries are more compliant
Larger arteries expad to absorb a sig fractin of SV, 80%
What determines compliance/
physical properties of tissue and tension
What happens to LA during diastole?
the elastic recil maintains sufficient blood pressure to provide uninterrupted flow to capillary beds
