Physics yr 8 Flashcards
pivot/fulcum
a fixed point around which something turns
moment
the turning effect of a force
measured in Newton mentres (Nm)
Moment = Force (N) x Distance (m)
The Principle of Moments
For an object to be in equilibrium, the clockwise and anti-clockwise moments are equal.
equilibrium
when an object is balanced
pressure
the amount of force per unit area of an object
measured in Newtons per square metre also called** pascals (Pa)**
pressure = force / area
fluid
a substance that flows
this means that it continually changes shape when force is applied to it
If you put two bowl like objects together and make the space within them a vacuum, are the sides of the bowls (hemisoheres) sucked inwards?
There is no such thing as the force of suction
Does atmospheric pressure increase or decrease with altitude?
At altitude there are fewer particles per cubic cemtimetre which means fewer collisions and less pressure
density
the amount of matter per unit of volume of an object or substance
density formula
Density = Mass / Volume
see density formula triangle in physics book
Density Units
kg(m3) / g (cm3)
compress
flatten by pressure; squeeze or press.
effort
a force exerted in a process
load
the force exerted on a surface or body
