Physics - Theory Flashcards
Define Newtons First Law
A body stays in the state of rest or a body continues to be in motion unless an external force is acted on it.
What Newtons First law also called?
The Inertia Law
Define the law of INERTIA.
Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a sudden change in its state of motion.
The law of Inertia states that……..The greater the _____ of the object, the greater the Inertia.
Mass
Meaning: The more difficult it is to move it when it is at rest and to stop it when it is in motion.
A block of mass 2 kg has a constant velocity when it is pushed along a table by a force of 5 N. When the push is increased to 9 N what is:
1. The resultant force
2. The acceleration?
- When the force is increased to 9 N, the resultant force is (9-5) N = 4 N.
- F=MA, if substituted, A=F/M
A=4/2 = 2 m/s^2
Define Newtons Second Law in terms of Acceleration
The acceleration of an object is directly propotional to the net force in the same direction and inversely proportional to the Mass of the Object.
Define Newtons Third Law
A body A exerts a unit force on object B, then object B exerts and equal but opposite force on object A
What does Newtons Third Law of Motion also State?
It States that forces never occur Singly but always in pair ans a result of the action between two bodies.
What is the SI Unit of ACCELERATION?
m/s^2 (M-Meters, S-Second)
Define One NEWTON
Newton is a Unit of Force.
Newton is equal to the force that would give 1 Kilogram Mass a acceleration of 1 m/s^2.
1 N = 1 KG x 1 m/s^2
What is the Unit of Force?
Newton (N)
What is the unit and value of Gravity on Earth?
9.8 m/s^2
Define Weight.
Weight is defined as the force of gravity acting on in which gives an acceleration when it is falling freely on the earths surface.
What is MASS?
Th amount of Matter present in an Object.
What is the formula for Weight?
W=M.g (W- Weight, m-Mass, g-Gravity)
What is the SI Unit of MASS?
Kilogram (KG)
What is the difference between MASS and WEIGHT?
The mass of an object always remains the same irrespective of gravity. Whereas, the weight of an object changes with respect to gravity.
What is Terminal Velocity?
The constant velocity a freely falling object falls due to its size, weight and shape.
What is the Resultant Force of a Freely Falling Object?
Zero.
The Resultant force of the object is Zero since the Gravitational Force balances the Frictional Force.
What is the Difference between a Newton, Joule and Watt?
Newton is the measure of Force.
Joule is the measure of work and energy in the metric system.
Watt is the measure of Power.
Define a Joule.
A Joule is at the Work done on an object when a Force of 1 Newton is applied through a Distance of 1 Meter.
1 Joule is = ?
1 J = 1 N.m
Work formula?
W = f . d
How much is 1 Newton in grams?
102 grams
