Physics / One-dimensional motion Flashcards
What is Instantaneous Speed?
It is the speed of an object at a particular moment in time.
What is Instantaneous Velocity?
It is the speed of an object at a particular moment in time with the direction of that speed.
Formula for Average Speed?
Average speed = distance traveled / time interval
Formula for Average Velocity?
Average velocity = displacement / time interval
What is distance?
Distance is defined to be the MAGNITUDE or size of DISPLACEMENT between 2 POSITIONS.
What is distance traveled?
Distance traveled is the TOTAL LENGTH of the path traveled between 2 positions.
Distance traveled is not a vector. It has no direction and, thus, no negative sign.
How many ways the word ‘distance’ is used in Physics and which?
It is used in 2 ways.
- Distance between 2 points
- Distance traveled by the object
What is Displacement?
Displacement is defined to be the change in position of an object.
Formula for Displacement?
Displacement = Delta x = xf - x0 where, xf is value of the final position x0 is value of the initial position Delta x is the symbol used to represent displacement
What does the slope represent on a position graph?
The slope of a position graph represents the velocity of the object. So the value of the slope at a particular time represents the velocity of the object at that instant.
Formula for slope of the graph?
slope = x2 - x1 / t2 - t1
