physics -magnets and electromagnetism cp10 p2 Flashcards
what metals are magnetic
iron, steel, cobalt and nickel
which way do field lines travel
-Field lines point from North to South.
how is magnetism induced
If a block of iron is placed next to a magnet, it will become a
temporary magnet and can attract objects like paper clips.
When the block is moved away from the magnet it loses its
magnetism.
what is the right hand rule
Thumb = current direction and finger= field direction
what is a solenoid
-This is a coil of wire with a current flowing in it.
-It has a similar magnetic field to a bar magnet.
3 ways in which an electromagnet can be made stronger
- Adding more coils of wire
- Increasing the current
- Adding an iron core in the coils
what happens when magnetic fields interact
If the field of an electromagnet is in the field of a
permanent magnet, the fields interact,
-This is known as the kicking wire or motor
effect
fleamings left hand rule
thumb- force
index -magnetic field
middle -current
how can the size of a force be made bigger
with a larger current, stronger magnet and more coils.
