physics -energy stores cp8 p2 Flashcards
kinetic energy is
any moving object
thermal energy is
anything warm
chemical energy is found in
food
fuels
batteries
elastic potential energy is
Energy in stretched or squashed objects
electrostatic energy is
: Energy in charged objects (+ve) or (-ve)
magnetic energy is
When magnets attract or repel each other
nuclear energy is
Energy stored in the nucleus of atoms
gravitational potential energy
Object up in the air or up hill
4 types of energy transfers
- Mechanically: this must involve a force
- Electrically: Energy flows in wires
- Heating: heat moves from hot objects to cold ones
- Radiation: by waves eg light and sound
what is energy conservation
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be
transferred from one store into another
wasted energy
Appliances often waste energy as HEAT and SOUND, this
energy spreads out into the atmosphere
what is work done
-Work is done when a force makes an object move in the direction of the force.
-Work done is EQUAL to the energy transferred.
-Work is measure in Joules,
what is power
- amount of work done in a
time of 1 Second
-energy transferred in 1
second
-Objects which do their
work fast are powerful
work done when climbing stairs
CORE PRACTICAL
- Weigh yourself on scales in Newtons
- Measure the vertical height of the stairs (m)
- Walk up the stairs and time how long it takes (s)
- Calculate work = Force x distance
- Calculate Power = work done ÷ time
work done and power when moving a box
- Measure the force you use using a Newton meter (N)
- Measure distance moved (m)
- Use a stopwatch to record how long it took you (s)
- Calculate work = force x distance moved
- Calculate the power = work done ÷ time
