Physics - Further motion concepts Flashcards
How may the momentum of an object change?
-the object speeds up or slows down
-the object changes direction
What is the conservation of momentum?
the total momentum before a collision is equal to the total momentum after a collision, if there is no external force acting on the objects.
What is newtons third law?
If body A exerts a force on body B, then body B exerts an equal but opposite force on body A.
What is recoil?
Backwards movement produced by a force exerted on an object to conserve momentum
What happens to the momentum in an explosion/cannon?
An object being fired from a cannon is also a collision where momentum must be conserved. As the momentum before the collision is zero, the momentum after the collision is zero.
What is a moment?
A moment is the turning effect of a force around a fixed point called a pivot.
What is a pivot?
A point around which something can rotate or turn.
What does the size of a moment depend on?
the size of the force applied
the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force
