Physics - Energy Flashcards
Name three different energy stores.
E.g. thermal, kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, chemical, magnetic, electrostatic, nuclear.
Give three ways in which energy can be transferred.
E.g. Mechanically, electrically or by heating.
What is work done?
Work done is the energy transferred mechanically or electrically.
What is meant by a “system”?
A system is an object or a group of objects.
Which energy transfers take place when a car is slowed down by applying the brakes?
Kinetic energy -> Thermal Energy
Describe the energy transfers that take place when water is heated in an electric kettle.
Electrical Energy -> Thermal Energy (Heating Element) -> Thermal Energy (Water)
Describe the energy transfers that take place when a ball is thrown vertically into the air. You must also take into account air resistance.
Kinetic Energy (bottom of flight) -> Gravitational Energy (top of its flight) -> Kinetic Energy (bottom of flight again).
Some energy is also lost as thermal energy when the ball does work against the air resistance.
Matthew has a lesson scheduled for 9:30am. What time will he arrive?
9:40am.
