PHYSICS END OF UNIT 1 GCSE YR 10 TEST Flashcards
What is distance?
Distance is how far an object moves. Distance does not involve direction
What is displacement ?
It includes both the distance an object moves, measured in a straight line from the start point to the finish point and the direction of that straight line
What are scalars?
They are physical quantities that have size/magnitude but no direction
What are vectors?
Physical quantities that have size/magnitude and direction
What is the formula for speed?
Speed=distance divided by time
What is the formula for velocity?
V=displacement divided by time
What is the formula for force?
Force=mass x acceleration
Distance is a scalar, therefore so is…
Speed
Displacement is a vector, therefore so is…
Velocity
Force is a
Vector quantity
What can a force do?
. A force can move an object
. It can change the shape of something
. A force can change motion
List some contact forces
. Air resistance
. Friction
. Stretching(tension)
List some non-contact forces
. Gravity
. Magnetic force
. Electrostatic force
What is the formula for moments?
Moment(Nm) = Force(N) x Distance(m)
What is the moment of a force?
The moment is the turning effect of a force
What is the law of moments?
Sum of clockwise moments= sum of anti-clockwise movement
This means
F1 x d1 = F2xd2
What can gears do?
Like levers, gears can transmit turning forces.
They can transfer turning effects whilst increasing them or decreasing them.
What is another formula for moments?
Moment = Force x Gear radius
What is inertia?
It is the object to oppose the change in motion. The more inertia something has, the harder it is to get it going/moving
What is a machine?
It is an apparatus using mechanical power and having several parts, each with a definite function which together perform a particular task.
What is velocity?
The speed of something in a given direction
What is meant by a resultant force?
The overall force exerted on an object
