GCSE PHYSICS YR 9 Different Types Of Waves Flashcards
Where do radio waves come from?
Created when an alternating current in an electromagnetic circuit creates an electromagnetic wave, a radio wave
What effects do radio waves have on the body?
Nothing happens as radio waves pass through the body without being absorbed
What can radio waves be used for?
To carry signals between your phone and the nearest mobile phone mast.
What effects do microwaves have on the body?
Some wavelengths of microwaves can be absorbed, causing heating of cells, which may be dangerous
What can microwaves be used for?
Microwaves are used for satellite communication.
They are also used to cook food in a microwave oven
Where does infra-red radiation come from?
It is given off by all objects. The hotter the object is, the more IR radiation it gives off
What effects does it have on the body?
IR radiation is mostly reflected or absorbed by the Sun, causing some heat too. It can cause burns if the skin gets too hot.
What can IR waves be used for?
When something absorbs IR radiation, it heats up.
Where does visible light come from?
Light signals are sent along optical fibres, thin glass or plastic tubes, which can carry information over long distances as pulses of light.
What effects does it have on the body?
Mostly absorbed or reflected by the skin but can cause some heating effects
What can this type of wave be used for?
The main use for visible light is looking at things but it is also used for communication
Where does UV radiation come from?
Produced by the Sun and UV lamps
Where do x-rays come from?
They are produced when electrons or other particles travelling st high speeds are stopped
What effects do x-rays have on the body?
Can cause cell damage
What can x-rays be used for?
X-rays are able to travel straight into into objects and pass through them if the substance is not too dense or thick
