B1 END OF HALF TERM TEST YR10 Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The net random movement of particles from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration
It is a passive process(means no energy is needed from the body)
What is concentration gradient?
It is the difference in the number of cells in one area compared to another
How are organs specialised to ensure diffusion is efficient?
- Have a large surface area
- A membrane that is thin, this provides a short diffusion pathway
- Animals have an efficient blood supply
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the net random movement of water molecules from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration across a partially permeable membrane.
There are different solution types…
What is Hypertonic Solution?
Higher solute concentration than solution
What is Hypotonic Solution?
Higher water concentration than another solution
What is Isotonic Solution?
Both solutes have an equal concentration of solutes
What is active transport?
It is the process by which molecules move from an area of low concentration to an area of higher concentration across a partially permeable membrane
