Physics Electricity and Magnetism 5.1 - 5.5 Flashcards
What are magnets
Magnets are objects that have a magnetic field
Whats the difference between hard and soft magnetic materials
Hard magnetic materials are those that lose their magnetism slowly while soft magnetic materials are those that lose their magnetism relatively quickly
Which poles attract and which poles repel
Opposite poles attract and like poles repel
In which direction do the magnetic field lines go
From north to south
What does the spacing between the magnetic field lines show
It shows the strength of the magnetic field in that region
How many poles do magnets have
Magnets have 2 poles
What are the 4 magnetic materials in the following:
N
C
I
S
Nickel
Cobalt
Iron
Silver
What is the force between a magnet and an induced magnet? (Repulsive, Attractive)
Attractive,
What is a magnetic material?
A magnetic material is a material that can be influenced by a magnetic field
What is the voltage formula and what are the units of each variable
V = I*R where v = voltage or potential difference which is basically a measure of the pressure or force driving the flow of electrons (Volts), I = current which is a measure of flow of electrons (Amperes or Amps), R is resistance which is a measure of the forces that oppose current flow (Ohms)
Which direction does the current flow in terms of conventional current in a circuit
From positive to negative
Which directions do the electrons flow in the circuit
From negative to positive
When temperature and resistance are constant, which two variables are directly proportional in the v = ir formula
V and I
What does a diode do
it allows for current to flow in one direction only
describe how the curve on a I/V graph looks for a filament lamp
It gets a slight curve as the resistance increases due to the increasing temperature which signifies that less current is flowing through the circuit
