Physics 5.6 - 5.10 Flashcards
What is static electricity
Static electricity is the build up of charge on an insulating material
How is static electricity discharged
Static electricity is discharged when electrons jump from a charged material to a grounded or earthed object
How is static electricity gained?
When two objects are rubbed together, the friction causes electrons to jump from one object to the other leaving one positively charged and the other negatively charged
Do protons jump onto other materials once rubbed together? (Yes, no)
No
Is it possible for two conducting materials to develop static electricity and why?
It isn’t possible because the electrons would flow back as they both would lose electrons
What are series circuits
Series circuits are circuits that consist of one loop and each component is placed after the other
Name one disadvantage of a series circuit
If a component breaks, it stops the flow of current to the other parts of the circuit
How do we place a volt meter in order to measure the voltage of that component?
We place the voltmeter in parallel to the component
How do we find out the total voltage in a series circuit?
The total voltage is just the addition of each individual voltage that each component has:
v total = v1+v2…..
How do we find out the total resistance in a series circuit?
The total resistance is just the addition of the resistances of each component
ResistanceT = r1+r2….
How do we find out the total current in a series circuit?
The current in a series circuit is the same everywhere
How do we place an ammeter in a series circuit?
We place the ammeter in series with the other components, It can be placed anywhere in the circuit
In a series circuit, components with a greater resistance will have a ____ share of the voltage (greater, less) and explain why
Greater: voltage is basically the force pushing the electrons in the circuit. You will require more force (more voltage) to push electrons through a component with a higher resistance
What is a parallel circuit
A parallel circuit is a circuit with more than one loop or a combination of a bunch of series circuits
What is the measure of the total voltage in a parallel circuit
The total voltage in a parallel circuit is the same everywhere because electrons flow to each loop like they’re their own circuits like in a series circuit
