physics electric fields Flashcards
what is coulombs law
the electric forces of attraction or repulsion are directly proportional to the product of the two charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between centers
what do two like particles field lines look like
what do two charges of unlike signs field lines look like
what do two parallel conducting plates look like
what is the unit for electric fields
NC^-1
what is corona discharge
electric fields are at there strongest near the sharp point on a charged conductor. these fields can be large enough to ionize the air around them. resulting in charge movement away form the conductor. the movement of a charge away from the conductor is corona discharge
what is the unit for potential diffrence
Volt and it is equivalent to one Joule per coulomb
what unit is used to convert volts to joules and joules to volts
1.6*10^-19
:what is the unit of a uniform electric field
Vm^-1
draw two magnets with like poles facing each other, unlike poles facing each other, unlike poles adjacent and like poles adjacent
what direction is the current flowing when it is an x
into
what is a solenoid and draw an example with field line and current (ask maylin how to tell which side is north)
a solenoid consists of many coils of wire
what are the two units of magnetic fields
Teslas or NA^-1m^-1
what is the diffrence between an x surrounded by a circle and an x
x without a circle is showing the direction of a magnetic field, with a circle is the direction of the electric field
draw a diagram of the hand with the corresponding labels for right hand rule
what happens to the direction of the force when the charge is negative
it is reversed
what is the unit for magnetic flux
Weber (Wb)
what does lenz law oppose
lenz law opposes the change in magnetic flux by creating an emf in the opposite direction
what does a step up transformer do
when the number of coils in the secondary is larger than the primary it is a step up transformer. this is when the voltage out of the secondary coil is larger than the primary
what does a stepdown transformer do
a stepdown transformer is when the number of coils i the secondary is less than the primary. this means the input current will be less that the output
