Q

explain Fraunhofer’s lines

A

the lower regions of the sun produce white light. as it passes through the suns atmosphere the temperature drops and the atoms of cooler gas absorb photons. this produces the dark lines.

Q

explain why the center of a satellites order must align with the center of the earth

A

the centers of the circular orbits must coincide with the center of the earth because gravitational forces provide the centripetal accelaration. the gravitational force must be must be directed towards the center of the circular orbit to provide centripetal accelaration for uniform circular motion.

Q

explain why electrons undergo uniform circular motion in a magnetic field

A

since a charged particle moving at a right angle to the magnetic field experiences a force of constant magnitude at a right angle to the velocity, the charge changes direction without a change in speed. the magnetic field provides the centripetal acceleration experienced required for uniform circular motion

Q

explain how a cyclotron works

A

An alternating potential difference between the dees creates an alternating electric field.

The electric field does work on the protons, increasing their kinetic energy.

A magnetic field passes through the dees’ plane, which exerts a constant magnetic force that steers the protons towards the electric field to be energised.

Q

what is the diffrence between a split ring and a slip ring

A

split rings are two half rings that connect either end of the coil to the brushes. the induced current is reversed every half rotation producing dc current.
Slip rings are two full rings that provide constant contact with the brushes. the current is not reversed and therefore produces AC current.

Q

why can’t particles be accelerated past the speed of light

A

if the speed of the object where to be equal to the speed of light the Lorentz factor would be infinite. inturn then time would be infinite which would equate to time standing still. or the perceived length would become zero all making traveling at the speed of light

Q

explain why objects cant reach the speed of light using mass

A

if the velocity of the object were to equal the speed of light the Lorentz factor would be equal to infinity. using newtons second law of F=ma this would mean that an infinity large force would be required to accelerate the object

Q

what must be included in designing a method/ investigation

A

step 1: Hypothesis
step 2: Variables
step 3: method- clearly describe how the independent is changed, the dependent is measured and other things are held constant.
-draw a diagram
step 4: table with 5 different independent variables and three trials of each.
