PHYSICS CHAPTER TEST 1 Flashcards
Matter
Something that has mass and takes up space.
States of matter
A physical form of matter, which includes solid, liquid, and gas.
Change of State
Change of a substance from one physical state to another.
Solid
Solid is a state of matter that has its own fixed shape, and its particles vibrate in its fixed shape.
Liquid
Liquid is a state of matter that doesn’t have its own shape, and its particles can slide past each other.
Gas
Gas is a state of matter that doesn’t have its own shape, and its particles move freely in all directions.
Relationship between temperature and kinetic energy
The temperature of a substance is a measure of
the average kinetic energy of the particles.
Thermal Expansion
Thermal expansion is when something gets bigger when it’s heated
Thermal Contraction
Thermal Contraction is when something gets smaller when it’s cooled
