Physics 6: Waves Flashcards
What is the amplitude of a wave?
Vertical distance
What is the wavelength ?
Horizontal distance (remember pick the same point on two adjacent waves)
(Meters)
What do we call the highest point on a wave
Peak
What do we call the lowest point of a wave
Trough
What is the frequency?
Number of waves in 1 second
Hz
What is a period
Amount of time it takes for 1 wave to form
1/frequency
What is the formula for velocity of wave (wave speed)
Frequency x Wavelength
State 2 differences between a transverse and longitudinal wave
Transverse waves:
- Displacement of wave is perpendicular to the direction of the wave
- Do not need particles to travel
Longitudinal waves:
- Displacement of wave is parallel to the direction of the wave
- Do need particles to travel
Examples of transverse waves
Electromagnetic waves
Examples of longitudinal waves
Sound
State the electromagnetic waves in order
Radiowaves Microwaves Infrared Visible light Ultra violet X-ray Gamma rays
State the use of radiowaves
