Physics 5: Forces Flashcards
What is the difference between a vector and a scalar quantity
Vector - magnitude + direction
Scalar - magnitude only
3 examples of vector quantities
Velocity
Force
Acceleration
displacement
3 scalar quantities
Speed
Mass
Time
Examples of non-contact forces
Gravity
Electrostatic forces
Magnetic forces
What is difference between weight + mass
Weight takes gravity into account where as mass doesnt
Weight is measured in Newtons
Mass is measured in Kg
What is the formula for weight
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
N Kg N/Kg
What is the formula for work done
Work done = force x distance moved
(J) (N) (m)
What is the formula for elastic potential energy
Ee = 1/2 x k x e^2
What does Hookes law state
Force applied to a spring is proportional to the extension. If the force increases the extension increases too
This only applied if the limit of proportionality has not been reached
What is the limit of proportionality
Point when the spring no longer extends despite you adding a bigger force
What does a flat line on a distance time graph mean?
Object is stationary
What does a flat line on a velocity time graph mean
Constant speed
What does a diagonal line on a distance time graph mean
Object is going at a constant speed
What does a diagonal line on a velocity time graph mean?
Object has a constant acceleration
What does a curved line mean on a distance time graph
Object is accelerating
