Physics Flashcards
isobaric
process that occurs at constant pressure, area under the curve is equal to the work done on the piston by the gas, pressure is constant but volume changes
isochoric
the volume is kept constant so no work is done
isothermal
temperature is allowed to escape, so as temperature stays constant, pressure must decrease, work is still the area under the curve
adiabatic
when no heat is transferred between system and enviornment
specific gravity
density of substance / density of water
hydrostatic gauge pressure
the pressure exerted by a liquid, hydrostatic = not moving, gauge = dont factor in air
gauge pressure = density of fluid * g * depth
archimedes principle
the magnitude of the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object
flow rate vs flow speed
flow rate tells how much fluid flows per unit time and flow speed gives velocity of fluid
continuity equation
as cross sectional area decreases, speed of a liquid increases
ideal fluid flow
- fluid in incompressible
- negligible viscosity
- laminar flow
- flow rate is steady
This means total mechanical energy is conserved
bernoulli’s equation
pressure + 1/2 * density * flow speed^2 + density * g *y
pressure through a tube
a smaller area results in a higher speed, but a lower pressure
adjustements for real gas equation
pressure and volume, real gases have higher volumes and lower pressures
