Physics 2b Flashcards
What happens when certain insulating materials are rubbed together?
Negatively charged electrons will be taken off one and added to the other
What is Static electricity?
Charges that are not free to move
Give an example of an insulating material
A polythene rod
What does an acetate rod do differently to a polythene rod?
Acetate gives electrons and polythene takes them
Does the acetate rod become positively or negatively charged? Why does it do this?
Acetate rod becomes positive because the rod loses the negative electrons
True or false - Positive charges move
False - only negatives move
What do opposite charges do ?
Attract
Why do the acetate and polythene rods manage to make you hair stand on end ?
They attract the opposite charge
What is current ?
The flow of electric charge round a circuit
What is the sign for current ?
A
What is potential difference ?
The driving force which carries the current around a circuit
What is the sign of potential difference ?
V
What is resistance ?
Anything in the circuit which slows the flow down
What is the sign for resistance ?
Omega
