Physics Flashcards
what are 3 applications of static electricity?
laser printers, fabric softeners, electrostatic precipitators
explain friction
when 2 objects are rubbed together (clothes in the laundry)
explain conduction
charging through contact, when objects touch and the electric charge is transferred from one object to another
explain induction
when the objects don’t touch at all and charge is transferred
what is an electric current?
the flow of charged electrons or ions in a circuit. it is measured in amperes.
What happens when 2 materials are rubbed together?
friction. before rubbing the materials together, it has an equal amount of positive and negative electrons. when they rub together the electrons (-) go onto the other object, making the original object positive.
What is the law of electric charges?
- like charges repel each other
- opposite charges attract each other
- charged objects attract neutral objects
what coulomb’s law?
the strength of the electric force with electric charges decreases with increasing distance.
