Biology Flashcards
what are the stages of sexual reproduction?
- production of gametes (meiosis)
- mating
- Fertilization
- Development of the embryo
what is the purpose of cells?
to produce proteins made of amio acids
explain ovulation
once the period ends a new egg starts to grow in the ovary inside a follicle (fluid filled ball). eventually the follicle bursts and releases the egg into an oviduct into the uterus.
explain the menstruation
if the egg doesn’t get fertilized, it dies and passes out of the vagina. the follicle also breaks down into a yellow body in the ovary. the lining of the uterus breaks down and leaves vagina and the cycle restarts.
name the parts of the female reproductive system.
ovaries, oviduct, uterus, cervix, vagina, urethra, clitoris, vulva
name the parts of the male reproductive system.
testes, scrotum, seminiferous tubules, epididymis, vas deferens,
what are male and female gametes for plants called?
male is called pollen grains, female is called egg cells.
what is the male reproductive hormone?
Testosterone, makes the voice deepen and muscles develop, and testes start to produce sperm
what is the female reproductive hormone?
Estrogen, it makes hips widen, period start, breasts develop, ovaries begin releasing eggs
what do the testes do?
produce sperm and testosterone.
what is the scrotum?
the sac-like organ containing testes outside the body (to keep them cooler for prime conditions)
how are sperm released?
sperm are released during ejaculation. they first pass through the vas deferens, then get fluid from the seminal vesicle and prostate gland, which is now semen. then the sperm is released from the urethra.
