physics Flashcards
1st law of conversation
ENERGY IS NOT CREATED OR DESTROYED,
IT IS ONLY TRANSFORMED FROM ONE
TYPE OF ENERGY TO ANOTHER
applies to Ep = Ek
2nd law conversation
WHENEVER ENERGY IS TRANSFORMED
FROM ONE FORM TO ANOTHER SOME OF
THE ENERGY IS LOST
when a ball is thrown up in the air, where would mechanical, kinetic and potential go?
when the ball is in the hand it has 100% kinetic however has it gets thrown up it gradually becomes potential energy , yet as it reaches the certain high, it turns into potential energy at the top, and then when it slowly drops, the potential slowly turns into kinetic again.
*mechanical stays the same
scalar
scalar quantity has a
magnitude only
vector
vector quantity has a
magnitude AND a direction
uniform motion
- equal distance over equal time
- distance remains constant with time
non-uniform motion
- distance is not equal to time
- increasing or decreasing NOT CONSTANT
steam engine
MACHINE THAT CONVERTS STEAM ENERGY (PRESSURE) TO MECHANICAL ENERGY
hero
observed that we can control and direct steam to create mechanical energy
thomas savery
sucked water out of mines
thomas newcome
IF THE STEAM IS COOLED THE ATMOSPHERE CAN CREATE PRESSURE)
A PISTON THAT STEAM MOVES UP, AND THE ATMOSPHERE PUSHED DOWN
james watt
THE ADDITION OF A VALVE ROD ALLOWED THE STEAM TO ENTER ON EITHER SIDE OF THE
PISTON, LETTING THE STEAM PUSH THE PISTON BOTH DIRECTIONS
thermodynamics 1st law
energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only altered in form
thermodynamics 2nd law
No process can be 100% efficient. Some
energy will always be wasted in the form
of heat, light, or sound
