Physical world development Timeline Flashcards
Piaget’s Stages & Ages
Sensorimotor stage (0-2yo)
Preoperational stage (2-7yo)
Concrete operational stage (7-12yo)
Formal operational stage (12yo and up)
Detailed Sensorimotor stage
1-4mo: Interact with the world by reflexes & repeat pleasurable actions.
4-8mo: Repeat actions towards objects to produce a desired outcome.
8-12mo: Combine several actions to achieve a goal.
-> 8mo: Emergence of object permanence, less present oriented.
12-18mo: Trial and error experiments. NO A and B error.
18-24mo: Fully developed object permanence. Can represent objects. Allows for symbolic thoughts.
Detailed Preoperational stage
Egocentrism and Centration. Conservation tasks.
Detailed Concrete operational stage
Reversibility, Seriation, Cognitive maps
Cannot think in purely abstract terms. Reason about concrete obj and events.
Detailed Formal operational stage
Can reason hypothetically & think abstractly. Pendulum problem.
Nativist view: Solid objects Timeline
Object permanence is present much earlier than 8 months (Experiment in the dark)
3.5mo: Pass Drawbridge Study.
Nativist view: Gravity Timeline
3mo understand gravity innate.
Nativist view: Number Timeline
6mo: detect 2:1 ratio.
9mo: detect 3:2 ratio.
Nativist view: Categorization Timeline
3mo: Cats vs dogs.
6mo: Mammals vs non mammals.
9mo: People, animals, inanimate objects.
12mo: Similarities in shape (trouble with boat-vehicle, snail-animal).
2-3yo: Hierarchies (superordinate, basic, subordinate).
Kids do A&B errors (i.e. tendency to reach for a hidden object where it was last found vs where it was last hidden) until ____
12mo
