Happiness Timeline
From birth: Smiles are reflexive and evoked by biological states.
2-3mo: Social smiles emerge (smile at a person - indication that the baby is more aware of the world around him).
5mo: Infant’s first laugh. Reason of laughing evolves with cognitive development.
Anger Timeline
4mo: Infants begin to express anger.
24mo: Peak in tendency to react with anger - terrible twos.
Fear Timeline
7mo: Infants begin to express fear.
8mo: Fear of strangers and separation anxiety emerge.
~15mo: Separation anxiety declines.
What scares children changes with cognitive development. Give the different ages with the different fears.
3-5yo: Fear imaginary creatures. Preoperational stage (can imagine abstract thoughts now).
7+yo: Fears related to everyday situations. Concrete operational stage.

7mo: Can distinguish expressions of fear and sadness.

3yo: Rudimentary ability to identify and label emotions in others and self.

3yo: Don’t understand this.
5yo:Understand that people can experience more than one emotion at a time. + Begin to understand that a person’s facial expressions do not necessarily match what they’re really feeling.

5mo: Infant show rudimentary emotion regulation skills: Self comforting/distraction.
6-8yo: Rely on cognitive strategies and problem-solving.
