Physical Weathering Flashcards
Frost shattering
Freeze-thaw weathering
Salt crystallisation
The salt forms into crystals through evaporation, as they grow they exert pressure within the rock causing it to crack
Wetting and drying
This happens in the tidal zone and where the clay are present and are expanding and contracting which causes the rock to weaken
Solution
Involving the dissolving of soluble minerals particularly limestone and chalk, the effect of it is to enlarge joints in the rocks creating jagered rock surfaces
Biological action
Involving marine organisms, they have adapted to break rocks especially chalk
Chemical weathering
Tend to occur in either wetting and drying and or the bottom of slopes where material and moisture often accumulates.
