Chemical Weathering Flashcards
Oxidation
Causes rocks to disintegrate when oxygen gets dissolved in water reacts with rock minerals forming oxides and hydroxides
Hydration
Makes the rock more susceptible to chemical weathering because of the minerals in the rock causes it to expand and weakens the rock
Hydrolysis
Mildly acidic water reacts or combines with minerals in the rock to create clay and dissolvable salts. This weakens the parent rock.
Carbonation
Carbon dioxide dissolved in rainwater makes a weak carbonic acid. This reacts with the rock (limestone) to create calcium bicarbonate which is easier to dissolve in water
Solifluction
In summer the ground thaws and becomes saturated and lies on top of frozen ground, then the top layer begins to slide downslope
