Physical Quantities Part 2 Flashcards
Scalars and Vectors
Define scalar
Physical quantities defined by magnitude only, eg. Length, Time, Mass, Speed, Energy, Power
Define vector
Physical quantities defined by magnitude and direction, eg. Displacement, Acceleration, Momentum, Moment, Force, Weight, Velocity, Gravitational Field Strength, Electric Field Strength
Describe vector diagrams
Shown using an arrow
Length of arrow - magnitude
Direction of arrow - direction
Define resultant of 2 vectors
Resultant is the sum or combined effect of 2 vector quantities, same as net vector
Define the parallelogram law
When 2 vectors are joined tail to tail, complete the parallelogram
Resultant found by drawing the diagonal
Define the triangle law
When 2 vectors are joined head to tail, draw the resultant vector by completing the triangle
Describe the components of a vector
V sin x - the vertical component of V
V cos x - the horizontal component of V
V sin x and V cos x are at 90 degrees to each other
