what is a landscape?
the visible features of a area of land
what are uplands?
land that is hilly or mountainous
what is the foreground?
the part of the view that is at the front
what are the 3 layers to a landscape?
-Physical (base) layer: rock type and landscape processes have sculpted a physical landscape
-Biological layer: soil, plants, trees
-Human layer: settlements, communications and farming
what is geology?
the study of rocks beneath our feet
What are lowlands?
Flat lands not much higher than sea level
What is the rock cycle?
when one type of rock changes into another type of rock
what is an igneous rock?
a type of rock formed on Earth’s surface (during volcanic eruptions), or deep underground y the cooling molten (hot, liquid) rock e.g granite
what is a sedimentary rock?
a type of rock formed by the deposition of sediment e.g sandstone
what is metamorphism?
a type of rock that has undergone change due to intense heat and/ or pressure e.g slate
what is weathering?
the breakdown of rocks at or close to Earth’s surface
what are the 4 types of erosion?
- hydraulic action: power of the water breaks the material apart
- abrasion: stones, sediment, ect, grind against the rock like sandpaper
- attrition: rocks knock against each other and become smaller
- solution: water dissolves certain rocks
