Physical Health and Fitness Flashcards
What is the site of gas exchange
Alveoli- this is where oxygen is taken into the blood to be transported to body and where carbon dioxide is removed from blood
What are the five main functions of the skeleton
- Supports and maintains body shape
- Protects internal organs
- Enables movement
- Produce blood cells (bone marrow)
- Storage of minerals (calcium & iron)
Define antagonistic pairs
Muscles always work in pairs because they can only pull not push. One muscle will contract and the other will relax.
How do the heart and lungs work together
Oxygenated blood comes from the lungs to the left atrium then the left ventricle where it gets pumped to the body. Then the deoxygenated blood gets taken to the right atrium then the right ventricle where it goes back to the lungs.
Random muscle things
The intercostal muscles contract when breathing in and relax when breathing out
Biceps are at the front of the arm while triceps are at the back
What is high blood pressure
When the blood is pushing against the artery walls too high, too often.
What is coronary heart disease
When the hearts blood supply is blocked. So, when the arteries get blocked and little to no blood can get to the heart
What is type 2 diabetes
When the body doesn’t make enough insulin. Insulin helps absorb the glucose you’ve eaten into the body
What is the function of arteries, veins and capillaries
Arteries- Carry blood away from the heart (Biggest)
Veins- Carry blood to the heart
Capillaries- Deliver blood to the cells (Smallest)
