Identification
Determines a substance’s physical or chemical identity with near certainty
IAFIS
Integrated Automated Fingerprint identification system, allows investigators go compare fingerprints
CODIS
Combined DNA Index System, allows crime laboratories to compare DNA samples
Trace evidence
Small fibers (hairs, skin cells)
Transient Evidence
Temporary (smells, temperature, footprints in dust)
Conditional Evidence
Produced by a specific action at the scene (lights, position of body, windows, doors)
Indirect evidence
Doesn’t prove or disprove a fact in question (proves something else, possibly drug use or other issues not nessacarily associated with the case
Circumstantial evidence
Based on suggestion instead of personal knowledge (probability and statistics important here, size 10 sneaker print nearby )
Individual evidence
Can be related to an original source (DNA, handwriting, fingerprints)
Class evidence
Associated with a group of similar objects but not one single source (blue jeans)
