Drugs/Drug administration Flashcards
UV vs IR spectrophotometry
UV is simpler, screening test.
IR is more complex, confirmation test.
Forms of Administration
Oral
Transdermal
Inhalation
Injection (popping, intramuscular, intravenous)
What are the forms of Marijuana?
Leaves, Hashish, Hash oil
Most often used illegal drug in the US
Marijuana
Most commonly used psychoactive and mind altering substance in the US
Alcohol
Color Tests
Drop chemicals on drugs and look at the color to determine what kinds of drug it could be, screening test.
Microcrystalline Test
Chemical added to drug on a microscopic slide and a crystalline structure is formed, screening test.
Chromatography
Mixtures are separated into their compounds/ paper with ink spot is placed into liquid, screening test.
Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)
A plate is put into liquid and the ink spot will move up the plate while separating into its components, screening test.
Gas Chromatography
A mixture is injected into a chromatograph where the stationary liquid phase separates the components , paired with mass spectrometry, screening test.
Spectrophotometry
A beam of light is passed through a drug sample and the intensity of light passing through is measured, confirmation & screening.
UV and Visible Spectrophotometry
A beam of light is separated into its components by a prism, then the intensity of light is measured by detectors and processed into a computer.
IR spectrophotometry
Radiation is passed through the sample to reach a detector, signal is amplified and converted to a computer, confirmation test
Mass spectrometry
A beam of high-energy electrons collide with the material to produce positively charged ions which decompose into fragments which separate according to their masses
Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry
Gas chromatography can separate the drugs, while mass spectrometry can be used to identify them
