How do you assess physical development?
- Height
- Weight, head and thorax circumference
- Upper extremities circumference
- Bone age
- Sexual maturation
Growth charts with percentiles and keeping track over time:
● 50th percentile is average
● Using the growth chart you can determine ideal weight for height percentile
BMI is also used to determine physical development.
Normal: 20-25
Birth average:
head circumference
33-35cm
Head circumference >
> chest circumference until 6 months of age
Head reaches 90% of adult size
Head reaches 90% of adult size by 3rd year of life
Closure of ant fontanel:
1,5 years
Closure of post fontanel:
1,5 months
Closure of the sutures:
6 months
Bone age:
Diseases that can affect the level of hormones can de-synchronise chronological age and bone age (GH deficiency, hypothyroidism, precocious anaemia, adrenal gland disorders, genetic syndromes like turners)
- Determined from left hand and wrist x-ray
First tooth:
6-8 months
Deciduous teeth:
20 teeth
Permanent teeth:
32 teeth all appear by 21 years old
Puberty in boys:
9-14 years
Puberty in girls:
8-13 years
How is puberty determined?
Determined using tanner scale
