What are the 2 types of physical development?
Gross motor skills
Fine motor skills
What are gross motor skills?
It involves the use of larger muscles in the arms and legs.
What are fine motor skills?
It involves the use of smaller muscles in the hands and fingers.
What are the 3 examples of fine motor skills?
Gripping= by 1month the they can grasp an adult’s finger. by 3months they can grasp a rattle for a short time.
Manipulation= at first they use their whole head to move and feel objects. by 12months they start to use the small muscles in their muscles.
Hand-eye coordination= they use the muscles in their fingers to pick up small things and they use their eyes to guide finger movements.
What are activities that can promote these 3 fine motor skills?
Gripping= holding a rattle or drawing with crayons.
Manipulation= building with blocks or dressing up a barbie doll.
Hand-eye coordination= writing, jigsaw puzzles or an interactive whiteboard.
What is a palmar grasp?
They start to use their entire hand to grasp objects including thumb movements.
This starts at around 6months.
What is the inferior pincer/pincer grasp?
They are able to use a thumb-finger grasp.
The difference between the 2 of these is the placement of the fingertips.
This starts at around 10months.
What is the tripod grip?
They use 3 fingers for this- thumb, index and middle fingers.
The 3 types of this is: dynamic, lateral and adapted tripod.
This starts at around 3/4 years.
What is holistic development?

What is a newborn reflex?
They are reflexes that babies are born with.
They are used for survival.
They tell us how well the nervous system is developing.
What are 3 examples of newborn reflexes?
Palmar grasp reflex= place a finger inside their palm and their hand will close around it.
Sucking reflex= something touches the top of their mouth and they will begin to suck.
Step reflex= holding them upright with their feet touching a surface and they will move their legs (walking).
