What is development?
It is the possession of skills that proceed through a set order.
The children are becoming more sophisticated and learning new skills.
What are the principles of development?
It begins with the control of head movements continuing down the body.
It also begins with uncontrolled large movements before it becomes more precise and refined (gross motor skills).
It occurs in an orderly sequence.
What are the different areas of development?
Physical= gross motor skills and fine motor skills.
Cognitive/Intellectual= thinking, problem solving and memory.
Emotional= managing emotions and attachment towards peers.
Social= positive relationships with peers and interacting with them.
Communication/Language= verbal and non-verbal.
What factors can affect development?
Growth
Genetics
Environment
Stimulation
Illness or injury
What is nature?
It is their genes and hereditary factors.
This can be their physical appearance and personality characteristics.
What is nurture?
It is their environmental variables.
This can be their childhood experiences, social relationships, upbringing and surrounding culture.
