What is atypical development?
It is when a child’s rates of normative development (milestones) are unusual and significantly different from their age range.
What are the 4 categories of atypical development?
Delayed global development.
Specific delay.
Gifted development.
Talented development.
What is delayed global development?
It is when a child hasn’t reached 2 or more milestones across all 5 areas of development.
Example: downs syndrome
What is specific delay?
It is when a child is delayed in only 1 area of development.
What is gifted development?
It is when a child is significantly ahead of other children their age.
They can become frustrated if the work is too easy for them.
They can become isolated from peers so they will gravitate towards the adults.
What is talented development?
It is when a child demonstrates higher than average skills in practical areas.
