Physical and non specific defences Flashcards
what do the lungs do as a barrier against dangerous microbes
cells produce mucus which traps dust and germs- cilia move the mucus upwards.
what do hair folicles as a barrier against dangerous microbes
glands in the skin make an antiseptic oil
what do cuts do as a barrier against dangerous microbes
when cut the blood forms a clot, which develops a scab to prevent entry of bacteria
what do eyes do as a barrier against dangerous microbes
tear glands make an antiseptic fluid which kills germs
what does the stomach do as a barrier against dangerous microbes
acid made by the lining kills the germs
what does the skin do as a barrier against dangerous microbes
dead outer layer forms a barrier against germs
what are phagocytes
these are the type of white blood cells that ‘mop up’ infected cells and pathogens that have entered the body. These cells go around ingesting then digesting microbes.
What do lymphocytes do
these are cells that produce antibodies. when it encounters a microbe it will produce antibody molecules, these join on to a a specific part of the microbe called the antigen.
This causes the microbe to instantly rupture.
What happens when you get chicken pox for example
when you get a disease once, your immune system produces a special cell called memory cells. This makes sure you dont get the same disease twice.
What are antibiotics
Antibiotics are group of chemicals that stop bacterial growth.
These are most commonly used to treat infections.
These are prescribed by doctors as tablets, creams and medicines.
The first antibiotic was discovered by Alexander Fleming.
