Physical and Chemical Changes Flashcards
(7.1) What is the particle model?
The particle model is a model that shows changes of states. It is:
Solid - melts (bonds broken) - liquid
Liquid - freezes - solid
Liquid - evaporates (bonds broken) - gas
Gas - condenses - liquid
(7.1) What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas
(7.1) What is the factor that causes a material to change state?
Heat
(7.1) When does a physical change occur?
When matter changes its physical properties but no its chemical nature
(7.1) Name examples of a physical change
Change in texture, shape, size, colour, state, volume, mass, weight and density
(7.1) When does a chemical change occur?
When matter becomes new or different matter; a new substance is formed
(7.1) What is a precipitate?
When two solutions are mixed, a new substance, in the form of a solid, can form. This is called a precipitate.
(7.1) What are some signs of chemical change?
Colour change, odour, bubbling and fizzing, light production, smoke and the presence of heat.
(7.1) What is melting?
Solid to liquid (energy is added)
(7.1) What is evaporation?
Liquid to a gas at the surface (energy is added)
(7.1) What is boiling?
Liquid to a gas all throughout (energy is added)
(7.1) What is sublimation?
Solid to a gas (energy is added)
(7.1) What is vaporization?
Any substance changing to a gas (evaporation, boiling, sublimation)
(7.1) What is condensation?
Gas to a liquid (energy is removed)
(7.1) What is freezing?
Liquid to a solid (energy is removed)
