Q

What are the signs of physical change?

A

-No new substances are created
-They change shape or form
-They contract or expand
-They change state or dissolves without forming a new substance.

Q

What are the signs of chemical change?

A
  • New substances are created
    -A permanent colour change
    -A gas is given off
-Seeing a new solid (precipitation) forming in a clear solution.
-A change in temperature happens or light is produced

Q

What is expansion?

A

When solids, liquids or gases are heated, they expand and take up more space. When expansion occurs, the volume increases and density decreases. ( escape their bonds)

Q

What is contraction?

A

When a liquid, gas or solid cools down, it contracts and causes the volume of the substance to decrease while the density increases. (lose kinetic energy)

Q

What are the properties of a solid?

A

The attraction between particles are packed tightly, incompressible and hold their shape. They vibrate on the spot, increasing based on the temperature.

Q

What are the properties of a liquid?

A

Particles are packed tightly together however as not as stuck as solids. Particles in a liquid vibrate however can still freely move.

Q

What is dissolving?

A

When a solid (solute) breaks down into smaller particles (dissolves) in a liquid(solvent) they form a solution.

Q

What is crystallisation?

A

If heat is applied to a solution, we can evaporate the solvent leaving behind the solute. It can be recovered using condensation with a distillation tube

16
Q

What is a reactant?

A

The old substance before a chemical reaction.

17
Q

What is a product?

A

The new substance after a chemical reaction.

18
Q

What is the worded formula for the forming of hydrogen chloride gas?

A

Hydrogen gas+ chlorine gas turns into hydrogen chlorine gas.

19
Q

What is combustion?

A

Is any chemical reaction that involves burning oxygen to release light and heat.
Hydrogen gas +oxygen gas tuns into water vapour

20
Q

What is photosynthesis?

A

the process where plants, using chlorophyll, convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose.

21
Q

What is glucose?

A

A form of sugar produced in photosynthesis and used in respiration to produce energy.

22
Q

What is chlorophyll.

A

The substance found in plant leaves that makes leaves green and collects energy from the sun for photosynthesis.

23
Q

What is the formula for photosynthesis?

A

carbon dioxide +water+sunlight turns into oxygen gas +glucose

24
Q

What is respiration in plants?

A

The process of extracting energy from food by converting oxygen and glucose into carbon dioxide, water, and energy.

25
Q

What are the 3 non living spheres?

A

air water and rocks and soils

26
Q

What is chemical weathering?

A

The breakdown of rocks due to reactions with acidic rainwater, snow, or hail containing dissolved carbon dioxide.

27
Q

What is flammability?

A

Describes how easily a substance can undergo combustion.

28
Q

What is corrosion?

A

A chemical reaction that can happen between metals and their environments

29
Q

What are compounds?

A

Compounds are substances made of two or more elements. (chemically bonded)

30
Q

What happens when water evaporates?

A

Water molecules break away from liquid to form a gas. Atoms don’t rearrange themselves so they’re still a physical change.
