What are the definitions of physical activity?
- Physical Activity – any movement that results in energy expenditure.
What are the definitions of sport?
- Sport – highly organised rules, complex skills, tactics, and competition
What are the definitions of exercise?
- Exercise – planned, structured, repetitive body movements, often aimed to improve fitness
What are the definitions of barriers?
- Barriers - Something or someone that has a negative effect on someone’s physical activity behaviour
What are the definitions of enablers?
- Enablers - Something or someone that has a positive effect on someone’s physical activity behaviour
Outline the social influences – barriers and enablers influences your participation in physical activity, sport and exercise. Explain them
Social Barriers:
- Income - low income can’t participate
- Education - if a school doesn’t have a PE teacher available the child may not learn the fundamentals
- Gender - girls may develop less skills in sport as boys are given more opportunities to participate
- Family - some parent don’t value the importance of sport
- Peers - lack of interest by peers, manes you might not either
Social Enablers:
- Income - higher income, access to more opportunities
- Education - opportunities to develop more skills, can use these latter in life
- Gender - males more like to develop skills in sport
- Family - parents might participate in sport encourages child too also
- Peers - having a challenge on who can do the most steps in a day, week, month
Outline the cultural influences – barriers and enablers influences your participation in physical activity, sport and exercise. Explain them
Cultural Barriers:
- Ethnicity - some ethnicity groups might not allow them to participate in sport, show skins or be amongst males
- Cultural norms - might see some girls at risk f they participate in sport
Cultural Enablers:
- Ethnicity - some ethnicity promote sport ie Kenya and running, their bodies are more suited to it
- Cultural norms - Australia encourage all cultures to participate in sport
Outline the environmental influences – barriers and enablers influences your participation in physical activity, sport and exercise. Explain them
Environmental Barriers:
- Access to facilities - large high rise apartment don’t have access
- Safety - no street light could prevent people being active at night
- Weather - places with lots of rain prevents participation
Environmental Enablers:
- Access to facilities - a worksite with a gym gives more access
- Safety - having bikes lanes accessible is safer
- Weather - sunny days encourage those to get out or having access to indoor areas
What are the social, cultural, environmental enablers and barriers that influence the amount of physical activity, sport and exercise we do?
- Social – friends, parents, siblings, neighbours
- Cultural – ethnicity, religion, beliefs, values
- Environmental – climate, location, safety features
Explain the phrase ‘sociocultural influences on movement’.
Sociocultural is a word that is a mix between social factors and cultural factors. This means that the sociocultural influences on movement are a mixture between these two factors on someone’s movement.
