Physic1 11-20 Flashcards
11 What is a chemical change?
A change in which chemical bonds are
broken and reformed to form new products.
12 What is specific heat capacity?
The energy required to increase the
temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1oC
13 What is Specific latent heat?
The energy required to change the state of
1kg of the substance with no change in
temperature.
14 What is the difference between
the specific latent heat of fusion and
the specific latent heat of
vaporisation?
Fusion is the change from solid to liquid and
vaporisation is the change from a liquid to a gas
15 What is shown by a flat section
on a temperature vs time graph
when heating a substance?
A change of state is taking place.
16 When changing state why
doesn’t the temperature of a
substance increase?
As the energy is used to overcome the
intermolecular forces within the substance.
17 How do particles move in gases
and liquids?
randomly
18 How is the temperature of a gas
related to the average kinetic
energy of molecules?
The greater the temperature the more kinetic
energy carried by the particles.
19 How does increasing
temperature affect the pressure
exerted
It increases the pressure applied by the gas
(assuming the volume stays constant).
20 Why does pressure of a gas
increase with temperature in a
given volume?
Particles have more kinetic energy so move
faster and collide with the walls of the
container more frequently and more force.
